On November 14th and 15th, a cast and crew of about 25 students performed “The Matchmaker,” written by Thornton Wilder, directed by Sarah Pressnell. This play was written in 1955 and later became the beloved musical “Hello Dolly.”
The Matchmaker follows Horace Vandergelder (Jackson Briggs), a wealthy merchant in 19th-century Yonkers, NY. He has been a widower long enough and has decided to remarry. He recruits the help of local matchmaker, Mrs. Dolly Levi (Lizzie Moran), but she has plans of her own. Meanwhile, Vandergelder’s niece Ermegarde (Averil Simkins) desperately wants to marry her artist companion Ambrose Kemper (Connor Moran), but Uncle Vandergelder refuses to allow it. Furthermore, his clerks, Cornelius Hackel (Carson Thiessen) and Barnaby Tucker (Seth Potter), have run off to New York City on a mission to have their own adventure. There, they find Irene Molloy (Reagan Simkins) and Minnie Fay (Camryn Winzer), who are also looking for excitement of their own. Hilarity and confusion ensue as everyone tries to secure their love lives and marry as they choose. Despite believing himself to be in charge, Vandergelder finds himself engaged to the quick-witted Dolly Levi herself, who is determined to share his wealth for the greater good.
We had an all-student-led stage and sound crew, and we are so grateful for all the hard work and dedication the students put into this production.
Thank you to all the students and parents involved who helped make Berean High School’s play another success!
