Secondary Fine Arts at Berean Academy
Berean Academy offers vocal music to all students Pre-K through 12th grade. Daily elementary music classes provide stimulating and quality instruction in basic music theory and history, singing, and performance. Students in 7th and 8th grade learn to sing in a mixed-voice choir with elective opportunities for guitar and general music classes. These students learn various music skills such as theory, sight-singing, musical expression, and quality singing tone.
Achieving excellence for God’s glory is a central theme in Berean Academy’s vocal music department. In addition to the multiple home concerts performed each year, there are several opportunities for singing advancement and competition. Students in grades 5-12 audition and are selected for league, district and state honor choirs. Junior high choir, small ensembles, and soloists participate in the league festival. The senior high choir, small ensembles and soloists participate in the KSHSAA regional and state festivals where they regularly receive 1 ratings.
The senior class at Berean looks forward to presenting the senior play, traditionally held in November, is a performance put on by the entire senior class as a fundraiser for their senior trip.
The theme verse for instrumental music at Berean Academy is Psalms 33:3 which says, “Sing to the Lord a new song, PLAY SKILLFULLY, and shout for joy”. This verse covers the four components of performing music-the singer (sing to the Lord); the composer (a new song); play skillfully (the instrumentallist); the audience (shout for joy). The band classes focus on increasing the skills of playing an instrument and includes exploring the roles of the singer, composer, and audience.
Instrumental music at Berean is offered in grades 5-12 with four distinct groups: the 5th grade band, the 6th grade band, the junior high band, and the senior high band. Each of these groups meets on a daily basis with approximately forty to forty-five minute of instruction time. There are opportunities for students in the junior high and senior high band to perform individually, in ensembles and as a large group at various events and concerts throughout the year. The senior high band class includes participating in Concert Band and Pep Band. Students in grades 7-12 audition and are selected for league, district and state honor bands.
Mrs. Bev Lister has led the band program for 30 years, achieving a level of excellence that has earned her junior high and senior high bands I ratings for many years. Mrs. Lister is recognized as an outstanding director throughout the state of Kansas.
Art & Design
Visual arts have always been a way to express the beauty of God. We offer students in grades 7-9 studio art introducing them to different mediums – painting, sculpting, photography, and drawing to name a few. Senior High students can elect to grow in their graphic design skills. Students are given the opportunity to express their God-given gifts through class projects displayed throughout our building on a regular basis. Miss Anne Morrow, Class of 1998, teaches art and design to our 7-12 students.
At Berean Academy we recognize the importance and value of a broad fine arts curriculum to students and its value to overall learning and long term quality of life — not to mention the integral communion forged over centuries between the expressive and visual arts and Christian worship and praise. Currently Berean offers Choir (7-12), Band (7-12), Art & Design and Drama.
We are blessed to have outstanding teachers and sponsors in each of these areas that are artistically and technically gifted as well as outstanding Christians. Bands, choirs, several ensembles and solos all participate at league, regional, and state festivals. Our students at the high school level have consistently achieved top (one) ratings in both vocal and instrumental music. Our high school groups also perform in area churches and service organizations.
